The future rewards those who look beyond the familiar
Newark, 1956
For a century the way to move cargo faster was to load it faster. Every port in the world was organised around that question — more men on the dock, better cranes, tighter scheduling.
Malcolm McLean stopped answering it. Instead of loading the ship better, he changed what was being loaded: a sealed steel box, packed once at the factory and not opened again until it reached its destination.
The Netherlands, 2006
For four hundred years the Dutch answer to a rising river was a higher dyke. After the near-floods of 1993 and 1995 forced mass evacuations, the country stopped raising them.
It moved dykes backwards, dug out floodplains and set aside farmland to be flooded on purpose — giving the water somewhere to go instead of holding it out.
Great Ormond Street, 2004
Handing a child from heart surgery into intensive care took a dozen people, a hundred small steps and no agreed order. The hospital had spent years trying to make it safer by asking the team to be more careful.
Two of its surgeons watched a Formula One pit crew change four wheels in seconds — silent, choreographed, one person in charge. They rewrote the handover as a pit stop.
